Reading email

There are three ways to read your email.

  • Webmail
  • IMAP
  • POP3

Webmail

Webmail is the simplest to get started. If your email address is joe@example.com, then use your web browser to go to http://mail.example.com, and then put in your email address joe, and your password.

The first time you log into webmail, you will need to provide your full name, and preferred email address.

Web mail has a simple interface, the folders are on the left and the emails are on the right. Click on the name of a folder to change folders, and click on the subject of an email to read the email.

One important option, is the "Change Password" link on the "Options" page. This will allow you to change your password. It is a good idea to change your password every few months.

POP3/IMAP

POP3 and IMAP are very similar. In either case you need to use a mail reader program such as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Mozilla Thunderbird.

POP3 is a simple protocol which downloads your new emails to your computer. IMAP is different, all emails stay on the server until you delete them. Which is better? It depends, if you have a laptop and read your email when you are not on the network, POP3 might work better. However if you read your email from 2 or more computers, IMAP is a better choice.

You will need to know your account name as well as your email address. Please consult the information that was provided you when you signed up for service.
